Are you practicing?
I have been recently relistening (is that a word?) to Practicing the Way by John Mark Comer. In it he speaks of Spiritual Formation practices he does regularly. They are:
Sabbath
Prayer
Fasting
Silence and Solitude
Scripture reading
Community
Simple Living
Generosity
Hospitality
Which one of these resonates with you? Which one feels super hard?
For me, Hospitality would probably be the easiest. We love having people in our home, eat around a table, talk, share life and pray together. Such good times.
The hardest would be Silence and Solitude.
Me, sit in a room/place, not saying or doing anything – what?! Get real, I am a doer!
But God. God asks us to sit and just ‘be’ with Him. Just as you would with a good friend or spouse. Often times, my husband and I go camping and many times, we just sit with a cup of tea and look out at nature. Nothing needs to be said. We just enjoy one another’s company and the surroundings we are in.
The same goes for Jesus. He loves to sit with us. Share the place we are in. Companiable silence and yet deep. We may feel something between us, or we may feel a deep peace. Each time may be different.
I encourage you to pick one of these practices, and start learning to do it more. Notice: it says practice. It will take time, but keep practicing! Our call is to abide with Jesus…be with Him, be like Him, do what He does.
I am off now to be alone with the Holy Spirit!
